apocalypse accepting user logins

apocalypse.OCF.Berkeley.EDU (192.58.221.245) is now accepting user logins. You should be able to connect to the server via SSH/SFTP to access your home directory and web space. If you're comfortable using a command-line mail client (e.g. mutt or pine), you'll also be able to read and send mail.

There are a few lingering issues with the server. In particular:
  • Public key authentication does not work. We're working on fixing this problem. Fixed.
  • Some pre-installed software and user commands may be missing or broken. We had to re-compile all of our software for the rebuild, and it's an ongoing process. We prioritized the most commonly used programs, but leave a comment if you think we've forgotten an important program. UPDATE: We know the software waitlist is building up, so we're getting more staff involved in this process.
  • Password changing does not work. Use kpasswd to change your account password. Windows password changing is still broken.
  • Cron jobs are not yet available. Cronjobs should now work as documented on our wiki.
The SSH host keys are:
  • DSA:
    04:68:af:14:ab:a1:4e:79:c3:42:6f:51:62:10:a2:5a
    xivit-hunuc-kogur-hizez-pazyr-bynat-pytop-zitos-dufuf-danec-sixax
  • RSA:
    72:16:9c:7e:7b:cc:a0:47:56:6d:e3:59:aa:04:bc:7c
    xipav-pizem-lysyd-kicyt-sococ-macuz-hyluc-vizoc-cotem-latig-muxyx
Thanks for your continued patience!

Just to check - are we supposed to be able to log in via SSH at this point? I've been unable to do so, even though I am able to connect to the temporary webmail server.

If it matters, I had coincidentally changed my password right around when the downtime began, but neither my old nor my new password work via SSH. (New password works for the webmail server.)

Thanks for keeping us informed on what's been happening!

Seems to be working at this point - thanks!

i seem to be able to log on via SSH, but what about proxy tunneling? is that still in the works?

thanks for all the hard work!

I get a failed to connect error when I tried loading apocalypse.OCF.Berkeley.EDU. Ideas? Thanks!

SSH tunneling and port forwarding should now be enabled. We forgot to enable it when we setup the machine.

I'm logging in via apocalypse (Alpine 2.00) and all the folders in my folder list are missing. Is this something that can be fixed? I'm not sure if they're gone, or just not accessible through Alpine 2.00.

Thank you so much for your help!

Lynx would be nice, but I appreciate that you have higher priorities.

Stephen Le said...

Lynx is now available. I'm hoping to also get elinks built after finals.

Would PHP be ready soon? Everyday I log on to see if it is ready.

Hai ....

Isnt PHP more commonly used than a text browser?

Stephen Le said...

Actually, the use of PHP on our login servers lags far behind the use of text browsers. PHP is still available on our web server, though, but we can't just copy it over due to architecture differences.

PHP has -many- dependencies, and compiling it is a very time intensive process. I hope to get it built for our login servers after finals.

There's something strange about the xterm settings, such that line breaks don't work properly. This comes out especially in lynx, where each line starts right below the end of the previous line (as well as everything being highlighted), so pages are very hard to read. This looks like the kind of problem that has a simple user fix, but I don't know what it is.

Also, it would be good to have emacs.

Stephen Le said...

I am unable to reproduce the errors you describe with lynx. Please send an email to staff with your username so we can investigate the problem.

emacs is also on the list of things to be built. I'm a vim user, so it got priority :P

When will we be able to set up our webspace? I've been using the makehttp option and keep getting the following error: "/opt/ocf/bin/makehttp: Command not found.
"

thx :)

I'm not able to access my webfiles in via an SFTP client (Fugu), or through Dreamweaver. Do I need to change my settings, or is access still restricted?

Cheers, and thanks for all your work.

Dear Blog,

I have the same problem anonymous has, namely I access my E-mail thru Alpine, and all of my old folders have disappeared! What's happened? How do I access them? I have years of stuff in those folders, and I really need them.

Thanx in adance for your help.

PS: Also, I now get a blizzar of spam. Is this a temporary problem? Is there something I am supposed to do about this, involving regenerating keycodes or something? I saw the message about the new keycodes, I hadn't thought it was relevant to a total vanilla user like me?

when you get the chance, can you also get mysqldump to work too?

right now i get:

Got error: 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) when trying to connect

thanks!

Note to 'amateur' Anononymous from the other Anonymous with the same Alpine folder-viewing problem...

I SFTP'd into my account (you can find directions in the OCF wiki) and was able to access my folders that way. In fact, I ended up downloading many folders to my machine because my account was going over quota (likely because I can't access my spam folder through Alpine and delete a bunch of stuff). I thought I'd post this, because it might be helpful to you to have access to your folders, but like you, I'm still waiting to hear back from ocf staff (I emailed them separately from these blog comments) to see if they can suggest a way that we can view our folders in Alpine, or switch back to using Pine. I'll post here if they offer a solution over email, or perhaps staff will answer here also.

Good luck!

Stephen Le said...

OCF staff really aren't familiar with pine (I think we all use mutt), so I'm not sure if we'll have a resolution to this problem.

Pine hasn't been updated since 2005 and has licensing issues, so we'd really like to avoid building it (or having new users choose it as their mail client).

I was having the same problem with the email folders in alpine, but I saw that my old pine folders still exist in my home directory. If you copy or rename your /Mail folder to /mail, you should be able to access them normally in alpine. Worked for me, hope this helps.

Anonymous said...

Eel, thanks so much for leaving that helpful comment! That worked a charm, and it's such a relief to have access to everything again!

Stephen, thanks for the feedback--now that I know this, I'll give mutt a stab...

-Anonymous with Alpine problem no more. :)

When I run nano, I got seg fault
Could you also install pycurl
Shouldnt have much dependency, since curl has already installed
Thanks sooooooo much!

Anonymous said...

Dear eel,

Thanks for the advice! I am a truly vanilla but very longtime user, who uses pine for his mail and just about nothing else, but was able to guess that "dir" was the right command after I exited pine, and found that yes, indeed, my old mail folders were in "Mail".

But I don't know the precise right command to copy or rename from Mail to mail. Also, is there a danger that if I just rename, I'll wipe out my current mail in my inbox?

Thanks again!

Stephen Le said...

pycurl is now installed. I'm investigating your problem with nano, and I'll try to figure out what's going on.

Anonymous said...

I am very sorry to bother you.

My nano is actually pico, since I have put
alias nano=pico
in my startup file for years, and I sort of forget I did that.

But still, running pico in conquest or apocalypse still give me a seg fault and a core dump

Also, I have trouble importing pycurl. I saw a python egg in the site-packages directory, but where is it installed. Or do I need to change my PYTHONPATH?

Thanks so much for your help

Stephen Le said...

Which python binary are you using? I installed pycurl for /opt/ocf/bin/python (Python version 2.6.2), and the module imports without error for me.

In regards to the issue with nano/pico, I think it's because they're both linked against the wrong curses library. I'll rebuild both editors with the correct library when I get a chance.

Stephen Le said...

Amateur,

Per eel's comment, you should be able to move the directory by executing "mv ~/Mail ~/mail" at an SSH prompt. Details about how to use SSH are posted on our wiki.

As to the safety of your data, I think it's a fairly safe thing to try, but I can't confirm (again, not familiar with pine at all). We backup user data daily, though, so, if something does go wrong, we can try restoring the files for you.

Anonymous said...

Stephen,

I figure it out. I should have used python2.6. I can import the module with no problem.
Thanks so much

Thanks Stephen!

My folders are all now rescued and accessible. However I have a new problem, a truly Alpine problem unfortunately, that I hope you or somebody else can help me with anyway.

My folders are now, all 60-70 of them, in a subdirectory called Mail. Which is inconvenient. How do I move them all up to the main directory where they used to be?

Also, what's the story on the spam situation? I am now getting about 20-30 spam E-mails per day. Is this just some weird kink with my account, or is everyone having this problem? And is it being worked on?

Thanks again,

-amateur-

wheezyg is right . . . I can't get the makehttp command to work.

Another note to 'amateur' Anononymous from the other Anonymous who used to have the same Alpine folder-viewing problem...

I've got a ton of spam too. I think spam-assassin is broken. I've tried deleting my procmail and forward files and starting over with spam-setup, but the command is broken. So, I think this is probably one of the services that staff will get around to restoring in a bit... :)

webmail and pop seem to be up.

ssh is down.

no notice/motd on the ocf home page.

Oh, SSH is down? I was worried that it was because I hadn't changed something.
